L.B. Foster Company (the “Company”) (NASDAQ: FSTR), is supplying 132,000 sq ft of steel grid bridge decking and other miscellaneous steel including structural beams, railing, drainage boxes, and expansion joints to owner, Detroit International Bridge Company (DIBC) for the rehabilitation of the girder and truss portions on the United States side of the privately-owned and operated Ambassador Bridge.

The Ambassador Bridge is a tolled suspension bridge across the Detroit River that connects Detroit, Michigan, United States, with Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The bridge carries approximately 25% of all merchandise trade between the United States and Canada.

L.B. Foster worked closely with bridge engineering firm, Modjeski and Masters and DIBC to design ready-to-install steel fabricated panels sized for specific roadway placement to minimize traffic disruptions and maintain current operations during construction. Concrete will then be poured into the steel decking at the jobsite to produce a structurally efficient grid system that improves the span’s strength-to-weight ratio.

“It takes many highly specialized people working together to ensure the successful completion of a bridge rehabilitation project, especially one so vital to commerce between the US and Canada” said Tim Pace, L.B. Foster Fabricated Bridge Products. The bridge owner acted as the general contractor. L.B. Foster, Modjeski and Masters and the installer, Toebe Construction were able to work as a cohesive team to minimize potential disruptions to the schedule by quickly resolving any design, fabrication and installation issues.

L.B. Foster’s AISC-certified Bedford, PA, plant maintains the largest production capacity in the industry for the manufacturing of this innovative deck material. The Pennsylvania facility also produces bridge railings, stay-in-place bridge deck forms and miscellaneous fabricated bridge components.
