New York Expressway/Dyer Avenue Bridge Re-decking Project

Any road project in Manhattan comes with its challenges. One of the largest is accommodating the busy traffic flow in the biggest city in the United States. That challenge was no different for the nearly 20,000 sq. ft. deck replacement of the New York Expressway/Dyer Avenue Bridge. Owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), the bridge is a hub to the Lincoln Tunnel, Times Square and Penn Station. The Lincoln Tunnel itself services over 100,000 vehicles per day.

Due to the high traffic and daily dependence on the structure, the plans required the bridge deck be open to daily traffic throughout construction. PANYNJ only permitted weeknight overnight closures between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. which resulted in a short list of options for the bridge deck material. Additionally, the deck thickness could not exceed 6”.

In partnership with contractor John Civetta & Sons, and engineering firm Stantec, L.B. Foster was able to design a precast solution that met the requirements of the project and allowed for overnight installation.

“There were limitations, but also flexibility within the specs of the project, giving us the opportunity to come up with the best solution,” said Mike Riley, Marketing Manager, L.B. Foster Fabricated Bridge Products. “We provided 118 precast numbered deck panels to allow for overnight installation while maintaining the structural integrity required to accommodate daily traffic throughout the project timeframe.”

As a result of the project, the PANYNJ now has a long lasting, intelligently designed, high quality bridge deck that will last for decades to come. “Together with our partners, we did our best job in helping minimize disruption in the busy lives of New Yorkers and visitors alike,” added Mike Riley.
